I think it depends on personality traits so can be risky. In many situations competition can be highly motivational, but it can also be very stressful. In the gentoo campaign, the competition was for fun rather than cut throat which is a good way to use it because it brings people together rather than driving them apart. Also, prizes are usually an additional motivator which can make people feel less guilty about acting competitively.
D'un coté certaines personnes ne fonctionnent pas sans la compétition, elles ont un besoin constant d'être premier. Mais à mon avis, si le travail en lui même est intéressant la compétition est plus stressante qu'autre chose.
